Matilda Bay Beez Neez

Beez Neez as it is now known was originally brewed as a Christmas surprise for employees at Capilano claim the Matilda Bay owners. Honey was the obvious inclusion with Capilano being one of Australia’s largest honey producers. It is claimed that the beer changes subtly with the changing varieties of honey used.

Danny’s tasting

As the name suggests BN has a honeyed sweetness about it but at a manageable level.

You can easily go onto the next beer straight after finishing the first one unlike a James Squire Golden Ale which in my view can be a bit sickly sweet. It seems like the next big thing in brewing is sweet honey tasting beers like Summer Ales etc.

I’m just waiting for Tooheys to release a Golden Syrup Sweet Amber Honeycomb Maple Ale which will attract bees from 20km away and have a Glycemic Index reading of 7000.

BN is hand crafted and I can’t think of many more worthy things to do with your hands than hand craft a beer (I said many more worthy things)

I think it’s only a matter of time before this beer reaches mainstream acceptance. Something I hope the brewers allow to happen by not marketing in the boutique demographic.

That all said I’m a fan of the Neez and recommend it to everyone. I give it an 8 though it could easily get to 8.5.(if a free case came my way)

Craig’s tasting

Continuing the trend of marketing beers that have a point of difference from their peers, Matilda Bay has managed to produce the most popular flavoured beer on offer. Well at least as far as Australia is concerned.

As you walk to the bar and take up a waiting position behind the dude getting service ahead of you, Beez Neez stands out as the tap with a little bit of excitement attached to it, the kind of excitement you might also get when a good looking sales assistant says more than two words to you while you are at a sales counter.

Your excitement levels continue to rise as you take this beer back to your table, even if it isn’t your first time. The reason for this is simply that this is still a beer that is a little bit different if not even a little bit dangerous.

As the beer caresses your taste buds and settles ever so beautifully in your stomach your a left with a sweetness that is not overpowering but very much present. The honey doesn’t control the beer, the beer beats the honey into willful submission.

As you finish you are reminded of films such as Die Hard and Top Gun. You become John Mclain, you become the Maverick in the room.

Finally you will want to turn to your buddy and say “mate you can be my wing man anytime”. When the response is “just finish your girly beer and get the next shout” you have two options. Start drinking your beloved Beez Neez at home or be out and proud by trying to turn your mates.
