Miller Chill

Miller Chill (as the name suggests) is part of the Miller Brewing Company lineup. The beer is made in the “Chelada” style, which is a variation on the Latin American concept of drinking beer with the addition of lime, salt, Tabasco, ice and even Worcestershire sauce. The beer was introduced in 2007.

Origin: various states, United States of America

Alcohol/vol: 4.2%

Style: Chelada

Average Rating: 6.25

May appeal on random occasions. Not all the time.

This autumn fear has a new name and it hits the shelves of your local bottle shop in the form of Miller Chill and let me tell you it's not happy. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Miller brewery clearly had exceptional taste and aroma in mind when brewing MC but only so they could avoid it wherever possible.

The Chelada style for those that don't know it is similar to a Radler beer. According to my Mexican amigo Jose Manuel Jesus Cabrera Angeles, a Chelada is supposed to replicate a beer poured over ice and lime juice in a salt rimmed glass. If you could spare a extra couple of dollars I'd suggest having a margherita instead. Come to think of it, the price you have to pay for this in the club you could buy a margherita outright.

Still all things considered I suppose you have to applaud Miller for trying something different, unfortunately it just doesn't work. I give it a 5.5. (any resemblance to a real beer past or present is purely coincidental)

With the world in the grip of a swine flu pandemic I am very glad I tried this mexican inspired beer prior to its outbreak.

As the swine flu sets about infecting every human on the planet, slowly turning us into a race of flesh eating Zombies, I have accepted that I could be conducting my last ever beer review. If the media hype is correct my next review will likely be an instruction manual on how best to attack one of the uninfected and turn them into a fellow swine flu Zombie.

It is in fact quite the coincidence that swine flu has become the cool disease of the moment, because it does share some similar traits to Miller Chill. Just two of the obvious similarities are:

  1. 1.Both would not exist without the help of Mexico and,

  2. 2.No one wants swine flu like no one really wants a Miller Chill, but once you have them you realise they are no where near as bad as you first thought.

Ultimately Miller Chill ends up bang in the middle of that ever growing category of “beers that people either love or hate”. Its slightly citrusy, salty yet heavily beery taste is definitely different. I am going to give it a decent rating, mostly because it is different and the concept has merit.

Unfortunately I am not prepared to highly rate the ridiculous media beat up that has become “swine flu”. I am going to find a cab driver and start a conspiracy theory that it is all a fabrication to take our mind of the Global Financial Crisis.

And finally, if you are a doctor or medical expert on the matter, please don’t email me and tell me I have no idea what I am talking about. Just let me enjoy my rant.
