Budweiser

Budweiser is an American lager and is one of the most popular beers in the US. It is also one of the most popular exported US beers. The beer is brewed using rice, hops and barley which helps create its unique taste. The bottle has changed little since 1876, with the distinctive red and white colour being a central part of the Budweiser brand.

Which of the following is the odd one out and why? Paris Hilton, Global Financial Crisis, Budweiser Beer and Reality TV. Answer; They are all things America is responsible for giving the world but Budweiser is the only one the US should have any degree of pride in taking the credit for.

I must admit I had a preconceived idea that Bud (being a mass produced beer in the US) would taste bland at best, and at worse, carbonated swamp water. I'm happy to say I was wrong. Well perhaps not wrong exactly, just that my ideas lacked a certain overriding degree of correctness.

Bud is hard to describe in that there is no real distinctive flavour or aroma to it. You'd say it was a great throw down lager that could be drunk in copious quantities. People looking for something a little different might be disappointed but if I was living in the US I could see this being my staple beverage of choice (because Tooheys don't export Old to the US).

Bud is advertised as the King of Beers and I'd have to say that claim isn't far from the truth. So much so that it's likely to get into my top 5. What's the world coming to when I rate a US beer so highly. I feel dirty and I'm not talking about that good dirty feeling. Anyway I give it 8.5

When I think of Budweiser my first thought is of the 1990’s advertisement with the the three frogs “Bud”, “Wies” & “er”. So much so that I am going to add a link to this ad on you tube so that everyone knows what I am talking about.

I have spoken of sportsmen in other reviews but of all the sportsmen in the world a few stand out as being the best of the best. These are the people that transcend sport. They are names like Pele, Bradman and Ali.

In an effort to get close to one of these men I recently visited the birthplace of Don Bradman. While i was there the curator told me a story of the time Don met with fellow cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar.

As the story goes, Sachin asked Don what he thought he might average if he was playing in this day and age. Being realistic Don said “To be honest I would be lucky to average 75 - 80 runs an innings”. Sachin, acknowledging that times had moved ahead as Cricket became more professional, then asked “What is the biggest factor that makes cricket more difficult today?” The Don replied “Well I am 89 years old now, I am not as fit as i used to be”.

I think Budweiser is the beer equivalent of a Pele, or a Bradman. Its reputation transcends beer, it has seen many competitors come and go and it is known the world over.

Bud, along with Guinness stands above many. Its reputation the stuff of legends. There may be better beers today but not many have or will achieve its legendary status.
